FDIC 2011 highlights

The 2011 Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) recently concluded, and the convention center was packed with exhibitors showcasing a wide range of fire apparatus, gear, and even some novelty items. This year, many vendors moved into the new convention center, creating an exciting atmosphere for attendees. Among the highlights were two local rigs on display: a Medtec Type III ambulance for Algonquin-Lake in the Hills in the Pierce booth, and a Cyclone II 95-foot rear-mount tower ladder for University Park in the E-ONE booth. A variety of other apparatus were also featured, including several from the FDNY. A Wheeled Coach ambulance on a four-door Ford chassis, an engine from Seagrave, and Rescue 4 and Ladder 137 from Ferrara were all on display. These units gave visitors a glimpse into the latest in firefighting technology and equipment. Crimson showcased a tandem axle rescue unit for Elizabeth, NJ, while KME displayed a tiller for Norwalk, CT. American LaFrance had a tiller for Ventura County, CA, and HME presented a Type III wildland pumper for CALFIRE. Each of these units highlighted the diversity and innovation in modern fire apparatus design. New product introductions at the event included Pierce’s Dash CF chassis under a PUC rescue pumper and a tracked mini pumper. Rosenbauer unveiled their Smart Cab enclosure, which adds a crew area to commercial chassis units. KME introduced the Predator Pro Series, featuring an integrated pumper and a new 76-foot aerial ladder. Crimson showcased their new Classic Series, reflecting their recent acquisition of Classic Fire. American LaFrance announced that their Eagle chassis and LTI aerials are now available to other manufacturers. Lastly, E-ONE presented their eMAX pumper series with a narrow operator's panel, emphasizing efficiency and ease of use. Overall, the 2011 FDIC provided a great opportunity for fire departments and manufacturers to connect, learn, and showcase the latest advancements in the industry. The event was not only informative but also visually impressive, with each booth offering something unique and interesting for attendees to explore.
