The Palatine Fire Department received multiple emergency calls around 11:00 AM on December 17, 2012, reporting smoke and fire coming from an apartment at 1213 Longvalley Drive. The incident occurred in an unincorporated area of the department’s jurisdiction, near Rand Road. As the number of calls increased, the battalion chief escalated the alarm to a working fire while units were still en route.
Initial reports indicated that someone was trapped on the third floor of the three-story building. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke pouring from the basement unit. Despite the challenging conditions, crews quickly launched an attack and managed to bring the fire under control within minutes.
Photos taken by Larry Shapiro show thick smoke billowing from the building and firefighters preparing to enter. One image captures a sector chief standing at the entrance as interior crews move into the structure. Another shows residents being escorted to an ambulance for medical evaluation.
The fire appears to have originated in the basement, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. For more photos from the scene, visit the full gallery here.
