FDIC 2011 highlights

The 2011 Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) has just concluded, and the convention center was packed with exhibitors showcasing a wide range of fire apparatus, gear, and even souvenirs. Among the highlights were two local rigs on display: a Medtec Type III ambulance for Algonquin-Lake in the Hills at the Pierce booth, and a Cyclone II 95-foot rear-mount tower ladder for University Park in the E-ONE booth. A panoramic view of the stadium exhibits showed that many apparatus manufacturers had moved into the new convention space this year. Larry Shapiro captured these moments, offering a glimpse into the latest innovations in firefighting technology. Other notable displays included pieces from the FDNY. A Wheeled Coach ambulance on a four-door Ford chassis, an engine from Seagrave, and Rescue 4 and Ladder 137 from Ferrara were all featured in their respective booths. The Seagrave Engine 222 and Ferrara’s Rescue 4 and Ladder 137 were among the standout units on display. Crimson showcased a tandem axle rescue unit for Elizabeth, NJ, while KME displayed a tiller for Norwalk, CT. American LaFrance presented a tiller for Ventura County, CA, and HME brought a Type III wildland pumper for CALFIRE. These vehicles highlighted the diversity of equipment available to fire departments across the country. In terms of new product introductions, Pierce unveiled the Dash CF chassis under a PUC rescue pumper, as well as a mini pumper on rubber tracks. Rosenbauer introduced the Smart Cab, an innovative enclosure designed to add a crew area to commercial chassis units. This feature offers enhanced safety and comfort for firefighters. KME launched its Predator Pro Series, a pumper-rescue combination built on a compact chassis, along with a new 76-foot aerial ladder. Crimson, following its acquisition of Classic Fire, showcased the "Transformer" model on a commercial chassis, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and versatility. American LaFrance announced that its Eagle custom chassis would now be available to other manufacturers, and that LTI aerials could also be purchased by third parties. Meanwhile, E-ONE introduced the eMAX pumper series, featuring a narrow operator panel for improved ergonomics and efficiency. These exhibits not only reflected the latest advancements in fire apparatus but also provided valuable insights into the future of emergency response equipment. As always, the FDIC remains a key event for fire professionals to connect, learn, and see the newest tools in action.
