Delfast Inc. is a well-known name in the electric bike industry, recognized for its innovative and high-performance models. The company recently made headlines when the Brevard Police Department began testing the Delfast TopCop electric bike as part of their evaluation process before considering a full purchase. This initiative marked an exciting step for both the department and the manufacturer.
The TopCop model quickly gained attention among officers, with many expressing interest in training to use it on duty. Two officers were initially assigned to conduct the training, but more were eager to try the e-bike under supervision at the department’s parking lot. Chief of Police J. Phil Harris praised the bike, stating, “I now have about half of my patrol officers asking to be bike trained so they can ride this bike on duty. We are fans.â€
Officers who tested the TopCop found it user-friendly, even for those without prior experience with electric bikes. They also noted that the bike performed exceptionally well on hills, maintaining speed and power without any issues. Another key advantage highlighted by the department was the bike's quiet operation, which allows for stealthy approaches. As one officer put it, “You wouldn’t know someone was riding near you until you actually see it.â€
The TopCop also proved to be a versatile tool for law enforcement. Officer Ronnie shared his experience, saying, “I believe we could utilize the bikes in a number of different ways that we can’t necessarily do on a traditional patrol bike.†He described how he used the bike to cover 4.3 miles during a domestic violence call, arriving faster than patrol cars and without getting out of breath. The bike also offers ample storage space for essential equipment like ticket books.
In addition to its practical benefits, the TopCop enhances police visibility and engagement with the community. The bright lighting and blue lights make it ideal for nighttime patrols, while its maneuverability in tight city streets makes it superior to traditional patrol vehicles. Officer Ronnie added, “With the e-bike, we could have a lidar-certified officer calling out speeding vehicles to an officer on the e-bike and by utilizing the lights and siren on the bike, we could conduct traffic stops.â€
Citizens also responded positively to the TopCop. One woman, whom Officer Ronnie was following up on, showed great interest and admiration for the bike. Many residents expressed approval, highlighting the positive impact the e-bike could have on public perception and interaction.
Overall, the Brevard Police Department sees the TopCop as a valuable asset that could significantly enhance their operations. As Officer Ronnie concluded, “I think these bikes would be a great asset to the department and would be greatly utilized in a number of ways.â€
