Throughout the north and northwest suburbs, over the past week or so, the sky has been filled with random smoke plumes, mostly from widespread prescribed prairie burns. While most of these fires are carefully managed, some have occurred without proper authorization, prompting a response from local fire departments. On Tuesday, while driving through the northwest suburbs, Larry Shapiro followed one such plume to an unsupervised prairie fire.
A large field was burning in the middle of open land, with thick smoke already beginning to clear by the time first responders arrived. The fire had been contained quickly, but the scene still showed signs of a significant blaze. This photo captures the moment when the Barrington Fire Department first reached the site.
Barrington units were called to a prairie fire behind homes on Old Dundee Road, west of Sutton (Route 59). As they approached, crews realized the fire was larger than expected and requested additional resources. Upon arrival, they found a large field that had already burned extensively, but there was still enough fuel left to pose a risk if the wind shifted. Fortunately, the fire was controlled without incident, and it remained within the grasslands, not threatening any nearby homes.
The Barrington Fire Department’s new IHC/US Tanker was on scene, along with two engines, a quint, an ambulance, a battalion chief, and a brush unit. The fire was fully under control, and no residential properties were affected. A brush truck arrived later and helped suppress remaining hot spots and secure the perimeter.
This image shows the size of the field involved. Most of the fire had already burned out before the department arrived, but the area near the homes was clearly visible. The fire stayed within the prairie and did not spread into the residential zone.
