Barrington brush fire

Throughout the north and northwest suburbs, over the past week, the sky has been filled with random smoke plumes, mostly from widespread prescribed prairie burns. However, not all of these fires are properly authorized or permitted, sometimes requiring a fire department response. On Tuesday, while driving through the northwest suburbs, Larry Shapiro followed one such smoke plume to an unsupervised prairie fire. A photo shows the scene upon arrival of the first Barrington Fire Department units, where the fire was burning along a line in the middle of a large field. The dense smoke had already started to clear, capturing a moment of the ongoing effort to contain the blaze. An embedded video (though currently inactive) was intended to show the event, but due to technical issues, it's not accessible. Nonetheless, the visual documentation provides insight into the situation. Barrington units were called to a prairie fire located behind homes on Old Dundee Road, west of Sutton (Route 59). As they approached, the responding crews requested additional units due to the size of the smoke plume. Upon arrival, they found a large field that had already been largely burned, but with significant fuel still present. The conditions posed a risk to at least one nearby home if the wind shifted. The new IHC/US Tanker from Barrington was on the scene, along with two engines, a quint, an ambulance, a battalion chief, and a brush unit. The fire was brought under control without any incidents, remaining contained within the grasslands and not affecting residential areas. Another photo captures the intensity of the flames, though the fuel load wasn’t enough to sustain the fire for long. A brush truck arrived later, entering the field to douse spot fires and the perimeter, helping to ensure full containment. A final image highlights the scale of the field involved, showing that most of the fire had already burned out before the fire department arrived. In the distance, there’s a visible area that didn’t catch fire, emphasizing how quickly the blaze was controlled. The foreground also shows how close the fire came to a resident’s yard. A small gallery of photos can be viewed here, offering a detailed look at the event and the firefighters’ efforts.
