Six members of the Hudson Fire Department from western McLean County were injured, one fatally, while responding to a multi-vehicle accident on a snowy interstate highway near Hudson on Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on Interstate 39 when a southbound semi-trailer truck lost control and struck three emergency vehicles, including those from the Hudson Fire Department and the Illinois State Police.
The victim has been identified as Christopher R. Brown, a 39-year-old volunteer firefighter with the Hudson Community Fire Protection District. According to the McLean County Coroner’s office, Brown suffered multiple blunt force injuries—primarily to his head, chest, and pelvis—after being struck by the truck. He was married and the father of two children.
Hudson Fire Chief Dan Hite expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling Brown “a member of our Hudson family.†In a statement, he said, “We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones, and we must not forget the valuable contributions he made to this community and the impact he has left on the Hudson Fire Department. The Hudson Fire Department is a close-knit family, and the loss of one of our own affects us all.â€
Brown, who also worked full-time as a firefighter with the Bloomington Fire Department, was remembered by colleagues as a dedicated and caring individual. His death has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing their condolences and support for his family.
While the names of the other injured firefighters have not been released, authorities confirmed that they are receiving medical attention. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but officials say the weather conditions—snowy and icy—may have played a role.
