Six members of the Hudson Fire Department from western McLean County were injured, with one losing their life, while responding to a multi-vehicle accident on a snow-covered interstate near Hudson on Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. as emergency crews worked to secure the scene on Interstate 39.
Chris Brown, a 39-year-old volunteer firefighter with the Hudson Community Fire Protection District, was fatally struck by a semi-truck that lost control during the incident. According to Coroner Beth Kimmerling, Brown suffered multiple blunt force injuries to his head, chest, and pelvis after being hit by the vehicle. He was described as a dedicated member of the department and a devoted father to two young sons.
In a statement, Hudson Fire Chief Dan Hite expressed deep sorrow over the loss. "Today we lost a member of our Hudson family," he said. "We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones, and we must not forget the valuable contributions he made to this community and the impact he has left on the Hudson Fire Department. The Hudson Fire Department is a close-knit family, and the loss of one of our own affects us all."
Brown, who also served full-time with the Bloomington Fire Department, was known for his commitment and bravery. His death has left a profound impact on the local community and first responders.
The incident involved three emergency vehicles, including those operated by the Hudson Fire Department and the Illinois State Police, which were struck by a southbound semi-trailer truck carrying cars. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but heavy snow conditions are believed to have played a role.
While the identities of the other injured firefighters have not been disclosed, the department has confirmed that several were taken to the hospital for treatment. A memorial service for Chris Brown is expected to be held in the coming days, as the community comes together to honor his memory and support his family.
