Media coverage of the 5-11 alarm fire at the warehouse on South Ashland Avenue on January 22, 2013:
From the Chicago Tribune:
Firefighters remained at the scene of a smoldering warehouse in Bridgeport early this morning, dousing hot spots after a massive 5-11 alarm fire swept through the five-story building. Nearly a third of the department’s on-duty personnel were involved in the effort to contain the blaze.
The fire was first spotted by a fire chief passing by the former Harris Marcus Group building at 3757 S. Ashland Ave. shortly after 9 p.m. As the flames spread quickly, additional alarms were called. The roof collapsed, and over 200 firefighters faced challenges like frozen hydrants and icy ladders. The fire was finally under control around 12:30 a.m.
Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago described the incident as the city’s largest in seven years. “This was an incredible fire with a huge fire load—lots of wood, old materials, and varnish,†he said. “Once it caught, it really took off.â€
Santiago added that the buildings were largely constructed of wood, with attractive facades but little structural integrity when burning. “When they start burning like this, they come down fast,†he said.
The extreme cold made the firefighters' job even more difficult. “We had ice weight on the buildings and ladders, which made everything harder,†Santiago explained. “We even had the Water Department help us steam off our ladders.â€
The on-scene commander escalated the response with a 5-11 alarm plus two special alarms, calling for extra equipment and manpower as the fire spread to nearby structures.
Special alarms are rare. A similar 5-11 with two special alarms was used in 2006 during the fire that destroyed the historic Wirt Dexter Building in the South Loop. That fire broke out before 3 p.m., caused major traffic issues, and led to CTA service disruptions on the Loop L tracks.
Last year, a 5-11 alarm fire occurred in the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side. It burned for hours and required about 200 firefighters, but no special alarms were needed.
Typically, alarms increase one at a time up to a fifth alarm. However, the incident commander skipped the fourth alarm once the fire spread to adjacent buildings.
