CFD Reserve Squad

There's been a growing conversation online about the current status of Engine 23’s former apparatus, the 2000 American LaFrance Eagle that's now in the spare fleet. Several readers have shared that the pump was removed and replaced with a large compartment, allowing it to function as a reserve squad unit. Recently, Jack Connors spotted this spare unit being used as the second piece for Squad 5 during an emergency call. He managed to capture a few photos while they were on the move, and he generously shared them so everyone can see what the unit looks like today. This particular unit is assigned shop number D572.

Tim Olk also came across this rig during a 2-11 alarm at 118th and Yale. It was clear that the unit was being used as a backup, just like the others in the department's fleet. The transformation from a traditional engine to a specialized rescue unit highlights how the Chicago Fire Department adapts its resources to meet modern needs.
