There has been some recent discussion online about the current status of Engine 23’s former apparatus, the 2000 American LaFrance Eagle engine now sitting in the spare fleet. Several readers have shared that the pump was removed and replaced with a large storage compartment, allowing the unit to function as a reserve squad vehicle. Jack Connors recently spotted this spare squad unit being used as the second piece for Squad 5 during a callout, and he managed to capture a few great photos while they were on duty. He submitted the images so everyone can see what the unit looks like today. This unit carries shop number D572.

Tim Olk also came across this rig during a 2-11 alarm at 118th and Yale. It was clearly being used as a backup unit, which is exactly the purpose it was reconfigured for.

It’s interesting to see how older apparatuses are being repurposed to meet modern needs. This particular unit, once an active engine, is now serving a different role, showing how the Chicago Fire Department continues to adapt its fleet to better serve the city. Whether it's for training, backup, or specialized operations, these vehicles still play a vital part in the department's daily work.
