"The Spark platform is set to accelerate manufacturing innovation."

SAN FRANCISCO – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Earlier this year, Autodesk introduced Spark, a groundbreaking open platform designed to simplify and enhance the 3D printing process. The goal of Spark is to make it easier for users to print 3D models with greater reliability and control over the final output. Now, Autodesk has partnered with Local Motors, a pioneer in open-source hardware innovation, to integrate Spark into the development of the Strati—the world’s first 3D-printed car.

"Spark is positioned to revolutionize how we approach manufacturing," said Alex Fiechter, head of community management at Local Motors. "From capturing our ideas more precisely to guiding Design for Additive Manufacturing (DFAM) and streamlining the creation of machine code, Spark will enable us to turn digital designs into real-world parts much faster than before."

The Strati project is currently being developed by Local Motors at the U.S. Department of Energy's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), one of the top centers for additive manufacturing research. The design was selected from a global community of contributors, and as the project advances, Local Motors plans to use the Spark platform—marking the first major industrial application of the tool.

"Local Motors sees the potential of Spark for large-scale manufacturing projects," said Samir Hanna, vice president and general manager at Autodesk. "This partnership is a natural step forward in pushing the limits of large-format 3D printing and redefining how products are designed and built."

ORNL and Cincinnati Incorporated collaborated to create a BAAM (Big Area Additive Manufacturing) machine, which functions similarly to a large-scale FDM printer. By modifying a 6.5' x 13' laser cutter with custom hardware, they transformed it into a massive 3D printer. Spark will play a key role in connecting digital automotive designs to the printer, making it easier to visualize and optimize 3D prints.

According to Local Motors, the Strati simplifies the vehicle assembly process by leveraging contributions from its global co-creation community, advanced manufacturing tools, and software like Spark. This innovation could lead to significant benefits, such as reducing the number of components in a car's Bill of Materials (BOM) from 25,000 down to fewer than 50. With on-demand 3D printing, manufacturers can easily modify or even redesign vehicles without incurring extra costs or time in tooling.
