Gurnee 5-11 alarm fire 8-23-11

The Gurnee Fire Department responded to a major fire at the Vista Hotel on Grand Avenue in Gurnee on August 23, 2011. Motorists reported thick smoke coming from the building around 6:45 PM. The hotel, which had previously operated as a Holiday Inn, was closed and undergoing renovations to reopen as a new hotel. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered heavy smoke and flames in the ballroom area, which was separated from the guest rooms by a large foyer and open lobby. Engine 1322 attempted to advance a line through the main entrance to prevent the fire from spreading into the lobby but encountered intense heat and heavy fire fueled by stored furniture. They withdrew and switched to a defensive position. The alarm was quickly escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm within 15 minutes, followed by a second alarm shortly after. By the time the fire had been burning for about 45 minutes, it was upgraded to a 5th alarm, indicating the severity of the situation. Two tower ladders, one from Gurnee and another from Round Lake, were deployed in the 'A' sector, while Gurnee Engine 1321 provided support with hand lines and a deck gun on the east side of the building. As the sun set, the fire’s intensity increased, producing more smoke and flames. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which ultimately destroyed the ballroom section and caused minor extension into the lobby. Over 20 fire departments from across Lake County and beyond responded to the scene, including units from Round Lake, Antioch, Fox Lake, Mundelein, Beach Park, Pleasant Prairie (WI), Libertyville, Newport, Zion, Waukegan, Deerfield, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Lake Zurich, Spring Grove, Long Grove, Countryside, Great Lakes, Lake Forest, Lake Villa, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Highland Park, Wauconda, plus the MABAS Division 5 Air Unit and the MESS Canteen. An excavator was brought in to knock down the remaining structure and sift through the rubble, allowing firefighters to reach hidden hot spots. After hours of effort, the fire was finally under control. Photographers Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk captured the event, with Larry sharing a full gallery of images available [here](#) and Tim updating his collection [here](#). Larry also planned to post a video after some rest. Additional coverage can be found [here](#), [here](#), and [here](#).
