I just got this update from Tim Olk:
Saturday evening, on July 23, 2016, the Chicago Fire Department’s Tower Ladder 10 responded to a high-rise building on North Halsted after receiving a call about four people stuck inside an elevator. After attempting to reset the elevator without success, they called for specialized help to deal with the blind shaft situation.
The responding companies included:
- Battalion 3
- Tower 10
- Squad 1
- Squad 2
- Special Operations Chief 515
- An ambulance
When they arrived, they found that the elevator car was wedged between the 2nd and 3rd floors. Firefighters secured the elevator and set up operations on the 5th floor using ropes, working down from the 4th floor. A firefighter was lowered into the shaft and discovered four young women who had been trapped for about two hours. Despite their ordeal, the women seemed to be in relatively good spirits. The firefighters then used ropes to carefully bring the women up to the 4th floor, where they were met by paramedics for evaluation.
Attached are some photos taken by Tim Olk showing the rescue operation in progress. You can see the firefighters preparing their equipment and working together to safely extract the被困 individuals. It's impressive how quickly they were able to respond and execute such a complex rescue while keeping everyone calm under pressure.
This is definitely one of those situations where you really appreciate the skill and quick thinking of our first responders. It sounds like everything ended well, though, which is the most important thing.
