Train derailment with fire in Northbrook

Late Wednesday afternoon, the Northbrook Fire Department responded to reports of a train derailment near the bridge over Shermer Road, just south of Willow Road. Initial units from Glenview Engine 8 and Northbrook Tower 12 arrived on the scene around 1:30 PM and discovered a brush fire along the roadway. Upon further inspection, they found that multiple coal cars had derailed, spilling their contents from the overpass down onto the street below. Tragically, the bridge—reconstructed in November 2009 following a prior derailment at the same location—was completely destroyed. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and authorities believe that no vehicles were beneath the bridge at the time of the incident. A Box Alarm was issued due to the intense heat, but firefighters were released without needing to deploy additional resources. Tim Olk arrived shortly after the blaze was extinguished and plans to share images later. Larry Shapiro followed soon after and captured several photos of the aftermath from both sides of the damaged bridge. One particularly striking image shows Northbrook Tower 12 positioned to provide a comprehensive view of the scene and the extensive destruction. Another captures a firefighter using a handheld hose to douse the remnants of the burning area. Other photos depict the shocking transformation of what was once a stable overpass into a chaotic pile of coal and debris. Glenview Engine 8 can be seen in action in one shot, highlighting the immediate response efforts. Looking south on Shermer Road reveals the full extent of the devastation, where rail cars and coal now litter the landscape. Additional photos taken from the north side of the bridge offer another perspective of the wreckage. Damage to the tracks is clearly visible, along with the scattered remains of derailed cars. This bridge had previously undergone reconstruction in November 2009 following a similar derailment. Looking back even further, images from 38 years ago show another derailment occurring at the same location, illustrating the unfortunate history of this stretch of railway. For those interested in seeing more visuals from this event, a gallery with additional photos is available [here]. Furthermore, detailed reports about the November 2, 2009 derailment can be accessed [here] and [here]. An aerial panoramic view of that earlier incident is also provided. It's disheartening to see such recurring incidents at this particular site, reminding us of the importance of ongoing infrastructure maintenance and safety measures. As the community begins to assess the damage and plan for repairs, it's clear that this derailment has left a lasting impact on Northbrook.
