Box alarm fire in Lake Forest, 2-23-17

Lake Forest firefighters responded to a fire at 81 W. North Avenue on Thursday, February 23, 2017, after reports of smoke coming from the basement of a home that was under renovation. Upon arrival, thick black smoke was visible, prompting the alarm to be upgraded to a Code 4 for a working fire. As conditions worsened and parts of the first floor became unstable, the incident was escalated to a Box Alarm. Firefighters worked quickly to bring the flames under control, and shortly after, the incident commander began to release units from the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but no injuries were reported. Residents were evacuated temporarily and later allowed to return once the area was deemed safe. Several photos captured the aftermath of the fire, showing the damage to the structure and the efforts of emergency responders. The images were taken by Larry Shapiro, who documented the scene with great detail. Additional photos can be viewed on Shapirophotography.net. Steve Redick, a local photographer, shared his experience from the scene: "I happened to be in the area, which is a long way from my usual beat. The fire was already well underway, but I got to see and photograph several fire trucks that I rarely encounter." His collection includes shots of equipment from various departments, such as Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Truck 51, Lake Bluff FD, Countryside FPD, Deerfield-Bannockburn FPD, and more. One image even features a unique bulldog character on a fire truck, adding a personal touch to the otherwise serious event. The fire serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with home renovations and the importance of quick response from emergency services. Local officials are encouraging residents to stay alert and follow fire safety guidelines.
