Still & Box with EMS Plan 1 in Chicago, 5-22-16

At around 5 a.m. on Sunday (May 22), Engine 63 responded to a working fire at 6514 S. Ellis Avenue. Upon arrival, they confirmed the presence of a fire and quickly engaged with the situation. Engine 60 approached from the alley and used their deck gun to target the fully involved back porches, successfully dousing much of the exterior flames. The 5th Battalion assessed the structure as a three-story, 75x100-foot apartment building and called for additional resources, including a still and box. During the incident, a family became trapped on the third floor and had to be rescued using ground ladders. This occurred just before 4-5-8 requested an EMS Plan I. Although fire spread to the rear of several apartments, it was contained relatively swiftly. Throughout the event, I focused primarily on capturing the rescue efforts, which meant I didn't capture many images of the firefighting activity at the rear of the building. It’s unclear whether anyone was transported to the hospital, but the family appeared to be in reasonably good condition. Smoke detectors were present in the building, though it remains uncertain whether they alerted the family to the fire. ![Chicago firefighters rescue victims with ladders](#) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![Chicago firefighters rescue victims with ladders](#) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![Chicago firefighters rescue victims with ladders](#) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![Chicago firefighters rescue victims with ladders](#) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![Chicago firefighters rescue victims with ladders](#) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![Firefighter overhauls after back porches burn](#) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![Chicago FD Truck 16](#) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* As the sun began to rise, the scene shifted from intense firefighting to the more methodical process of overhauling the damage. Firefighters worked diligently to ensure that any remaining embers were extinguished, preventing further spread. The resilience of both the firefighters and the community was evident throughout the entire ordeal, with everyone pulling together to manage the situation effectively. This fire serves as a stark reminder of the importance of having functioning smoke detectors in homes. While the exact details of how the family was alerted remain unclear, it highlights the critical role these devices play in ensuring safety. As someone who has witnessed countless emergencies, I continue to stress the need for preparedness and vigilance, especially during the early hours when visibility and awareness can make all the difference. Despite the chaos, there’s always a sense of relief when lives are saved, and today was no exception. The dedication and professionalism displayed by the Chicago Fire Department never cease to inspire admiration.
