Around 4:50 AM on Sunday (May 22nd), Chicago firefighters responded to a working fire at 6514 S. Ellis Avenue. Engine 63 arrived shortly after and confirmed the presence of a fire. Engine 60 took the alley approach and utilized their deck gun to douse the fully involved back porches, successfully suppressing most of the exterior flames. The 5th Battalion assessed the scene as a three-story, 75x100-foot apartment building and requested additional resources including a still and box assignment. One family was trapped on the third floor and had to be rescued using ground ladders just moments before 4-5-8 called for an EMS Plan I. Although fire spread to the rear of several apartments, it was brought under control fairly quickly. I spent much of my time capturing the rescue efforts, so there aren't many images from the rear firefighting operations. It's unclear whether anyone was transported to the hospital, though it seemed the family was in relatively good condition. Clearly, working smoke detectors were present in the building, but it remains uncertain if they alerted the family to the fire.

These photos really capture the intense yet controlled nature of the operation. You can see how quickly responders acted to ensure everyone’s safety. There’s one particularly striking image where you can clearly make out the firefighters' determination as they worked to bring the situation under control. Another shows the aftermath, highlighting the damage done to the back porches, which were severely affected by the blaze. Despite the chaos, there’s a sense of order and professionalism throughout these images.
