**SAN FRANCISCO – (BUSINESS WIRE)** – Technology continues to play a pivotal role in the art of storytelling, and this year’s Academy Award nominations highlight the incredible craftsmanship of the global computer graphics (CG) industry. From Best Picture winners to Visual Effects and Animation categories, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), a leader in media and entertainment software, supported the creation of many of this year’s most celebrated films. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also acknowledged Autodesk’s contribution by presenting it with a prestigious Scientific and Technical Achievement Award (Sci-Tech Award).
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see Autodesk’s tools support the creative vision behind the Best Visual Effects Oscar-winning film for 20 consecutive years,†remarked Chris Bradshaw, Autodesk’s Senior Vice President. “We’re equally thrilled that the Academy recognized Robert Bridson, who leads our Research and Development team, for his groundbreaking voxel data structures technology.â€
**Best Visual Effects**
In the Best Visual Effects category, all five nominees utilized Autodesk’s technology to captivate audiences around the globe. These films include “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,†“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,†“Guardians of the Galaxy,†“Interstellar,†and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.†The remarkable visual effects in these movies were brought to life by thousands of talented artists across 25 visual effects studios spread across four continents. The production journey spanned from previsualization to virtual cinematography, post-production, and even color grading.
This year’s Best Animated Feature nominees showcase a diverse array of animation styles, ranging from hand-drawn to stop-motion and CG. Autodesk’s software contributed to four of the five animated feature nominees: “Big Hero 6,†“The Boxtrolls,†“How to Train Your Dragon 2,†and “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya.†Additionally, two of the Best Animated Short contenders—“Feast†and “The Dam Keeperâ€â€”relied on Autodesk tools. This year, Robert Bridson, a senior principal research scientist at Autodesk, received a Technical Achievement Award for his pioneering work on voxel data structures and their application in fluid simulation tools. This innovation has profoundly influenced volumetric tool development across the visual effects industry. Weta Digital in New Zealand was among the first to adopt this technology, utilizing it for “Avatar.†Over the years, Autodesk’s scientists, designers, and technologies have been honored seven times at SciTech Award ceremonies.
