3rd Alarm in Lake Zurich on 6-20-11

A fire broke out in an attached three-car garage at 21396 Brandon Road in Kildeer around 6:00 PM, prompting the Lake Zurich Fire Department to respond with three engines and a ladder truck. Due to the lack of hydrants in the area, Long Grove Fire Department sent a 3,000-gallon tanker for auto-aid. As units arrived on scene, flames were already rising over 20 feet from the garage, which contained two vehicles. The incident quickly escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm and then to a second alarm within minutes. Lake Zurich Engine 4 positioned itself at the base of the driveway after the tower ladder was backed into the narrow road. A skid loader and a 2½-inch line were deployed from Engine 4, supplemented by 3,000 gallons of water from Long Grove Tanker 55. Lake Zurich Engine 3 laid 900 feet of 5-inch hose down the road, while Engine 2 extended another 700 feet, meeting up with Barrington Tanker 361, which set up a portable tank. The in-line operation was completed before water ran low. The fire primarily remained in the garage but spread into the house and attic. A tower ladder was placed on the narrow driveway, requiring all outriggers to be set on grass. Arlington Heights firefighters assisted with roof ventilation as interior crews worked to extinguish the fire that had reached the attic. Once the main fire was under control, Lake Zurich crews began wetting down areas of the garage, while Lake Forest firefighters tackled remaining hot spots after part of the outer wall collapsed. A third alarm was called in for additional manpower during salvage and overhaul operations. One firefighter was taken to the hospital following a rehab session. Larry Shapiro captured several images from the scene, including the arrival of Lake Forest Engine 422, Mundelein Engine 431, Grayslake Engine 2717, and Mt. Prospect Engine 13. Additional units from Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, Wheeling, and others responded to the call. On scene, tankers from Long Grove, Barrington, Nunda, Cary, and Palatine Rural provided support, along with engines from Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, Grayslake, Mundelein, Mt. Prospect, and Lake Forest. Ambulances from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville, Highland Park, and Lake Villa were also present, alongside squads from Deerfield, Wauconda, Gurnee, and Arlington Heights, which brought a tower ladder.
