It was a devastating scene in Leaf River this past Monday afternoon when a historic barn, over 150 years old, went up in flames around 3 p.m. The structure, located at the southeast corner of State Route 72 and Main Street, dated back to 1844 and had been in Nancy Stukenberg's family for generations. She recounted how her three horses, which are usually kept inside, were fortunately in a nearby feedlot when the fire broke out and are all safe.
The barn contained hay, feed, and various pieces of equipment, but as Stukenberg pointed out, "Everything else can be replaced." Thankfully, no people or animals were harmed in the incident, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to Leaf River Fire Chief Steve Shelton.
The rescue efforts faced significant challenges due to high winds, icy roads, and deep slush brought on by a recent winter storm. Despite these difficult conditions, firefighters from ten local departments managed to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent structures. They were able to save two neighboring homes, demonstrating their dedication and skill under pressure.
According to Saukvalley.com, mutual aid was quickly mobilized across multiple departments. Radioman911.com reported that assistance came from Byron’s engine, truck, and chief; Win-Ber-Sew RIT mutual aid with an upgrade request for Stillman Valley’s engine, German Valley’s engine and ambulance, Mount Morris’ truck and squad, Forreston’s squad, Oregon’s engine and tender; Mount Morris also sent their tender, ambulance, and chief; German Valley contributed their tender, Oregon provided their cascade, and Polo sent RIT - COQ: Lynn Scott Rock engine, Forreston ambulance.
As residents and first responders reflect on the event, there is relief that the damage could have been far worse. The community has rallied together to support Stukenberg and others affected by the fire, showing solidarity during tough times. While the loss of such a historically significant building is undeniably painful, the fact that everyone involved made it through unscathed is a testament to both the resilience of the community and the bravery of those who put themselves in harm's way to protect others.
