From excerpts shared on DailyHerald.com:
Schaumburg firefighter Mike Solberg passed away on Friday at the age of 34 following a long 3½-year battle with brain cancer. The Schaumburg Professional Firefighters Association paid tribute to him on Facebook, stating, "It is with a heavy heart, we announce the passing of one of our own, Mike Solberg." They highlighted his courage and described him as an inspiring role model for living life to the fullest. Schaumburg Fire Chief David Schumann expressed his condolences on behalf of the department, noting the resilience firefighters show even in times of loss.
Mike Solberg, who resided in Park Ridge and was the son of Palatine Councilman Greg Solberg, joined the Schaumburg fire department on October 12, 2012. Just two weeks later, severe headaches sent him to the ER, where imaging tests revealed a large brain tumor. Days after that, he underwent surgery to remove a grade four glioblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Although the disease initially went into remission, it recurred last June, forcing him onto light duty while undergoing rehabilitation for physical and occupational therapy. In December, his fellow firefighters organized a benefit event for Solberg and his family at Durty Nellie's in Palatine.
Surviving him are his wife Maureen, their young daughter Emma, his parents, a brother, two sisters, and other relatives. Visitation will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at Cumberland Chapels located at 8300 W. Lawrence Ave. in Norridge. Funeral services will commence at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home before proceeding to St. Eugene Church at 7598 W. Foster Ave. in Chicago for Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery at 1400 S. Wolf Road in Hillside.
Rather than flowers, those wishing to honor Mike Solberg can make donations to the Schaumburg Firefighter’s Fighting Cancer Pink Tie Ball, either by sending contributions to 950 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg IL 60194 or visiting pinktieball4092.com. This cause was particularly close to Solberg's heart, as he had devoted considerable time and effort to supporting it throughout his career.
Thanks for sharing, Paul. It's truly heartbreaking to hear about such a young life being cut short, especially someone as admired and loved as Mike Solberg. His story is a powerful reminder of both the fragility and strength of human spirit, and I hope his family finds comfort in knowing how many people cared deeply for him.
