Crash with extrication in Long Grove, IL 9-2-16

Early Friday morning, on September 2nd, 2016, Long Grove firefighters found themselves responding to a severe collision at the busy intersection of Lake-Cook Road and Illinois Route 53. The incident involved a car that had slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer and became wedged underneath it. The crash occurred just after 1:30 AM, and the driver of the vehicle was trapped inside, requiring immediate assistance. The Long Grove Fire Department quickly called for backup from neighboring departments including Buffalo Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Palatine. Together, they worked diligently to free the trapped driver using three sets of hydraulic tools. The extrication process was challenging and took nearly an hour to complete. At one point, there was consideration for requesting a medical helicopter to transport the injured driver, but this was ultimately canceled once it was determined that the patient would be transported by ambulance instead. Throughout the operation, firefighters utilized various techniques to stabilize the scene and safely extricate the victim. In one image, you can see the use of cribbing and airbags to lift the semi-trailer, providing enough clearance to free the trapped car. Other photos capture the intense aftermath of the accident, showing the extent of the damage and the complexity of the situation. Despite the early hour and the severity of the crash, responders remained focused on ensuring both the safety of those involved and the integrity of the scene. As more details emerge, we will continue to update this story. For now, the community is grateful for the swift and coordinated efforts of all the first responders who were on the scene that night. *More updates to follow shortly.*
