At around 2 AM on Monday (April 4, 2016), Chicago firefighters were dispatched to a laundromat located at 5130 W. Fullerton Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered a significant fire raging inside a single-story, 60×100-foot commercial building featuring a bow-string truss roof. Fortunately, there were no immediate structures nearby that could be affected, as both sides of the building had parking lots.
Once the firefighters managed to ventilate the roof, they transitioned to a defensive strategy. Tower Ladder 14 was positioned to the west while Squad 2A took up a stance to the east. A special request for another tower ladder led to Tower Ladder 23 being set up at the front of the building. For nearly two hours, two multi-versals and three elevated master streams poured water onto the blaze, attempting to control the flames.
The intense fire quickly spread to the front of the building, causing damage to a vehicle parked curbside. Additionally, a gas-fed fire burned freely near the entrance, prompting the utility company to be contacted to shut off the gas supply.
