September 1st, 2016, around 9:30 AM, there was a report of a structure fire at 549 Indian Trail in Round Lake Park, Illinois. Both Round Lake and Grayslake fire departments were dispatched to the scene. When they arrived, they found a single-story home fully engulfed in flames. Command quickly escalated the situation to a box alarm due to the intensity of the fire.
The firefighters initially focused on putting out the main body of the fire, which they managed to do relatively fast. However, they soon discovered that the fire had spread into the attic space. Accessing the attic from below proved challenging because the pitched roof had been installed over an existing flat roof. This meant that the only viable option was to fight the fire from above.
As the situation evolved, it became clear that a more defensive strategy was necessary. Libertyville’s tower ladder was brought in to help knock down the flames. Despite their efforts, the fire continued to burn fiercely, making the task even more difficult. Ultimately, the fire department had to switch to a more aggressive defensive approach to bring the blaze under control.
One resident was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation as a precautionary measure. As part of the investigation, the State Fire Marshal’s office was contacted to bring in a K9 unit to search for any signs of accelerants. The homeowner claimed that the fire might have been intentionally set, suggesting foul play.
