MySuburbanLife.com recently published a touching story about Geneva firefighters supporting a local veteran. The article highlights the efforts of the Associated Firefighters of Illinois, Geneva Local 4287, who are set to give a brand-new vehicle to U.S. Army Specialist Joshua Kerber, a 26-year-old from West Chicago who lost his left arm in Afghanistan in 2009.
Kerber shared part of his journey with the Geneva City Council earlier this week. "I joined the Army in 2008," he explained. "I looked at my job prospects and realized I needed an education, but I couldn't afford it. The Army had always been something on the back burner for me. My family served, and it felt like the right choice."
The incident that changed his life occurred during a routine security operation when his convoy was attacked by rocket-propelled grenades. As the gunner on the lead vehicle, Kerber was hit. "It was just another night, but everything changed after that," he said. "I tried to return fire, but the second hit made it impossible to get back up. I have shrapnel all over my body, and my right arm is injured too, but there's no nerve damage. The left arm – it wasn’t useful anymore anyway."
Flanked by Geneva firefighters and union members Kevin Swanson, Rod Johnson, and Dave Lentz, Kerber stood proudly as they wore black T-shirts supporting their fundraising initiative. Johnson, the vice president of the local, explained the origins of the Warrior Program, which has been active across Illinois for six years and has given away seven vehicles to wounded veterans.
"We started this program in June with a big goal: not just selling a few shirts, but $30,000 worth of shirts," Johnson said. "We wanted to find someone in need and help them out." The program has partnered with local businesses like the Kane County Cougars, Firehouse Pizza and Grill, and Old Towne Pub in Geneva. So far, they've sold around 2,500 shirts at $20 each, with all proceeds going toward purchasing a vehicle for a veteran.
Although the Geneva local has taken the lead, other nearby fire departments, including West Chicago Local 3970, Batavia Local 3436, Elburn Local 4749, and St. Charles Local 3322, are also involved in the effort.
"Josh chose a brand-new 2014 red Ford F-150, and Fox Valley Ford gave us an amazing deal," Johnson added. "We're going to buy it together this week." On Friday, Kerber will throw out the first pitch at Fifth Third Ball Park, and the vehicle will be presented to him on the field before the fireworks show.
This heartwarming story showcases the power of community support and the incredible impact that local firefighters can have on the lives of those who have served our country.
