The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, formerly known as the Vernon Township Fire Protection District, is witnessing the end of an era as they recently parted ways with their last two Seagrave units. Once an all-Seagrave department, the district has now transitioned to a full Pierce fleet. The first unit sold was a 1996 Seagrave 100′ rear-mount quint, which was replaced last year at Station 53 by a new Pierce Arrow XT 105′ rear-mount apparatus. This unit was later acquired by the Mount Washington Fire Department in Kentucky.
The second unit sold was Engine 51R, a 1992 Seagrave pumper equipped with a 1,500-GPM pump and 1,000 gallons of water. It was eventually purchased by the Locke Township Fire Department in Salisbury, North Carolina. These sales mark a significant shift in the department’s history, reflecting changes in equipment and operational needs over the years.
Prior to the current fleet, the department operated several Seagrave units, many of which were part of the original Vernon Township Fire Protection District. One of these early units was Engine 1, a 1981 Seagrave WB series pumper featuring a 1,500-GPM pump and 500 gallons of water. Another notable unit was Engine 2, a 1979 Seagrave WB model that carried 1,000 gallons of water and also had a 1,500-GPM pump.
Perhaps the most iconic of the older Seagrave units was Truck 1, a 1979 low-profile Seagrave W series 100′ rear-mount ladder truck. It was equipped with a 1,250-GPM pump and carried 100 gallons of water. This unit served as the predecessor to the 1996 Seagrave quint that was recently sold, highlighting the evolution of the department’s apparatus over time.
These historical photos, taken by Larry Shapiro, offer a glimpse into the past and serve as a reminder of the department’s rich heritage. As Lincolnshire-Riverwoods continues to modernize its fleet, it's clear that while the old Seagrave units are no longer in service, their legacy lives on in the memories of those who once operated them.
