According to the results of its third annual Water Quality Survey, Aquasana has found that many Americans have changed their perception of drinking water due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the celebration of National Water Quality Month in August, the company conducted a survey to understand how the pandemic has influenced public views on tap water quality. The findings reveal some significant shifts in how people think about their water.
Today, Office H2O is diving into the key insights from this year’s Water Quality Survey. We’ll explore what you should consider regarding your drinking water moving forward and why these concerns are more relevant than ever.
**Drinking-Water Quality Concerns in the Age of COVID-19**
The survey showed that more Americans are now worried about the quality of their tap water, especially after spending more time at home over the past year. Out of 2,413 adults surveyed, 73% said they were at least somewhat concerned about the quality of unfiltered tap water in their homes. A striking 36% of respondents reported that the pandemic increased their worries about water quality.
When it comes to specific contaminants, there was a notable rise—26% more people now list cysts, bacteria, and viruses as their top concern. These contaminants are now seen as more dangerous than other harmful substances like pesticides or lead. Additionally, awareness of “forever chemicals†(PFOS and PFOA) has nearly doubled since 2019, showing growing public concern over long-term water safety.
**What You Need to Know About Your Drinking Water and COVID-19**
So, why has the pandemic made people more cautious about their tap water? One reason is that with more time spent at home, people are using tap water more frequently. This increased reliance naturally leads to more questions about its safety.
Many people have turned to the EPA's website for answers, asking whether tap water is still safe during the pandemic. According to the EPA, tap water remains safe to drink, and the World Health Organization confirms that no evidence has shown the virus in water supplies. However, despite these assurances, the survey shows that public concern has grown significantly.
In our previous article, we outlined three important points: first, that tap water is still safe; second, that municipal water treatment plants continue to operate effectively; and third, that simple precautions like cleaning faucets and avoiding public fountains can help reduce risk.
With 74% of adults now using some form of water filtration, it's clear that more people are taking steps to ensure their water is as clean as possible. If you're concerned, researching effective filtration systems can provide added peace of mind.
