Autodesk Pushes the Boundaries of BIM in the Evolution of the Architect (Part II)

Autodesk showcased Dynamo Studio, Insight 360, and Project Expo Tech Preview at AIA 2016. Yesterday, we started a conversation ahead of AIA 2016 about the evolving role of architects and our shared mission with you. As mentioned in Part I of our preview, most of Autodesk’s tools are now connected to a Revit core—effortlessly, seamlessly, and efficiently. We introduced the concept of extended BIM, making your life and team's workflow simpler. Let’s continue exploring how Autodesk is helping enhance your work while boosting your productivity at AIA 2016. **Save Time, Save Money: Dynamo and Computational Design** Computational design is gaining momentum, based on the idea that any design problem can be represented as an abstract model with clear guidelines, which can then be solved through computation. In short, computational design uses computing power to generate complex geometries and objects in architecture. In the past, creating and updating dynamic models was time-consuming and inefficient. However, Dynamo, a visual programming environment powered by the Dynamo engine and accessible via Dynamo for Revit and Autodesk Dynamo Studio, offers a solution. Designed to integrate with Revit, Dynamo for Revit extends BIM with a graphical algorithm editor. Dynamo Studio, launched at AIA 2015, is a standalone tool that allows designers to create visual logic for parametric designs and automate tasks without being tied to Revit. Dynamo also supports interoperable workflows for documentation, fabrication, coordination, simulation, and analysis. [Image: Rapid iteration of design concepts] Sean Burke from NBBJ highlights how his team used Dynamo to extract data from legacy DWG files and convert them into native Revit linework. This process transformed "not-smart" 2D drawings into intelligent, usable data. For the average user, this means turning unstructured information into smart, actionable insights. Using Dynamo on a project involving 75 buildings saved NBBJ approximately 1,650 hours. According to Burke, it was the most impactful workflow on the project. Dynamo User Groups around the world are growing as designers share innovative ways to save time, money, and stress. Insight 360 gives architects centralized access to building energy and environmental performance data, using advanced analysis engines within an intuitive interface. With bi-directional BIM integration, direct access to leading tools, and guidance from industry benchmarks, architects can make better decisions throughout the building lifecycle. [Image: Mills Group Energy Analysis] Ryan Hess from Mills Group, a firm based in West Virginia, has been using Insight 360 to design The Health Plan headquarters. Before Insight 360, the firm struggled with outdated energy modeling software that lacked user-friendly interfaces. Now, with Insight 360 and Revit, they can justify design choices with clients, showing that features are not just aesthetic but functional and responsible. Designing with Revit at the core is part of our extended BIM approach. Visit our booth to see Insight 360 in action. **Blow Your Clients’ Minds: Project Expo Tech Preview** Visualizing ideas is crucial in the AEC industry. Autodesk understands this and is introducing Project Expo, a tech preview that will revolutionize how professionals present their designs. Using the Autodesk Stingray game engine, Project Expo allows real-time visualization of Revit models on desktops or mobile devices. [Images: Stingray Model 1 and 2] Heather Johnston from PLACE architect describes the challenge of capturing the true essence of a space in visuals. Nelson Weeks from Lord, Aeck and Sargent adds that the goal is to help clients feel the space and know they’re getting what they want. Project Expo simplifies the process by taking your Revit model, processing it in the cloud, and delivering immersive, real-time experiences. No other platform offers the combination of Revit, 3ds Max, and Stingray in one seamless workflow. Join us at booth 3531 on May 19 at 11 am for a special demo. **Evolving Together** At AIA 2016 in Philadelphia, remember that Autodesk is here to support you. The evolution of the industry and your role as an architect is happening, and we're moving forward with you. We’re committed to ensuring our products, team, and services meet the needs of your future. On May 11, we launched “The Revit Station,” a new crowdsourced platform where users can vote on feature requests and track the development of future releases. Stop by our booth to share your thoughts, stories, and feedback. We value your input and are always looking for ways to improve your workflow. Engage with us—Autodesk has your back and your future in mind. **Autodesk Class/Theater Schedules, Demos, and Experts** For more details on all the activities Autodesk has planned for AIA 2016, including class schedules and demos, visit our event page. Come by our booth to speak with a product expert and learn more about our BIM technologies or get personalized technical support.
