Polyester film companies will face new challenges

Frost & Sullivan, a leading global strategic consulting firm based in the United States, recently published its "Global Polyester Film Market" report. The study highlights that despite economic slowdowns in the U.S. and Western Europe, global polyester film consumption is expected to grow at a strong pace, primarily driven by the rising demand from emerging markets like China and India. Additionally, the rapid expansion of the packaging and electronics industries is anticipated to further boost market growth. However, the report also notes that polyester film companies will face significant challenges, particularly in finding new application areas as some traditional markets shrink. Polyester films are widely used in the packaging sector, where they are increasingly replacing rigid packaging with flexible alternatives. This shift is expected to drive demand for polyester films in applications such as vertical bags, which are commonly used for pet food, detergents, snacks, and microwaveable meals. Thermoformed packaging caps are also on the rise, with polyester films valued for their heat resistance. Other promising areas include snack bags, meat containers, cheese boxes, and more. In the electronics industry, polyester films play a key role due to their aesthetic appeal and durability. They are used in touch layers for appliances, toys, computers, and instrument panels. Their excellent insulation properties also make them ideal for use in refrigerator and washing machine components. Additional applications include cable jackets, capacitors, and flat panel displays (FPDs). Beyond packaging and electronics, polyester films find use in industrial applications, imaging, magnetic materials, X-ray films, pressure-sensitive films, fluorescent films, and glass films. Looking at regional trends, China and India are showing strong growth. In 2006, global polyester film production reached about 1.629 million tons, with sales of around $5 billion. By 2013, the market is projected to reach $6.98 billion, growing at a compound annual rate of 4.9%. The U.S. remains the largest market, followed by Japan and Western Europe. However, both regions are expected to see slight declines in sales due to macroeconomic factors. In contrast, China's polyester film market was valued at approximately $790 million in 2006 but is poised for rapid growth, with sales expected to reach $1.62 billion by 2013 at an 11.4% CAGR. India, with sales of $310 million in 2006, is also on a fast track, with projections of reaching $900 million by 2013 at a 15.5% growth rate. To remain competitive, manufacturers are focusing on R&D to expand the range of applications. For example, DuPont Teijin has partnered with Logic Plastics to develop a flexible organic light-emitting display using polyester film. Companies like Toray and Mitsubishi are also exploring new uses in LCDs and plasma displays. Innovations such as shrink labels, antibacterial films, vacuum-sealing films, and infrared-absorbing films are being developed to meet evolving needs. However, overcapacity in the Asia-Pacific region poses a challenge. China’s production capacity reached 400,000 tons in 2006, with more lines under construction, while demand stood at only 290,000 tons. Similar issues exist in India and South Korea. Anti-dumping policies in the U.S. and EU have further limited export opportunities, forcing producers to cut output or reduce operating rates. Rising raw material costs, increasing competition, and stricter environmental regulations add to the pressure on manufacturers.
