Chlor-alkali industry in Wuhai has a good momentum of development and chlor-alkali production capacity will reach “double hundred”

In the first two months of this year, Wuhai City's chlor-alkali industry showed strong growth, with PVC output reaching 25,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 47%, and caustic soda production at 26,000 tons, up by 26%. These figures highlight the city’s growing importance in the region, as its production accounts for over 40% of the autonomous region’s total. The industrial base is becoming more prominent, playing a key role in resource conversion and economic development. Currently, three major chlor-alkali companies operate in Wuhai: Wuhai Chemical Industry, Junzheng Technology, and Haiji Chemicals. Haiji Chemicals is expected to resume full operations in the first half of the year, while Wuhai Chemical Industry will complete its full production capacity during the same period. Junzheng Technology is set to produce 250,000 tons of PVC in its initial phase. By mid-year, Wuhai is projected to have a combined PVC and caustic soda production capacity exceeding 1 million tons, which will help consume local raw materials such as raw coal, clean coal, and calcium carbide, thereby enhancing the value of on-site resource utilization. The city expects PVC and caustic soda output to reach approximately 500,000 tons in 2009. To support long-term growth, Wuhai is committed to establishing itself as a national PVC production hub. By the end of the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan,” it aims to achieve a PVC production capacity of 2 million tons and a caustic soda capacity of 1 million tons. To achieve these goals, the city is actively seeking policy support, financial subsidies, and technological transformation funding. Wuhai has also laid out plans for several key projects, including the PVC seawater production base, the deep processing base of Haibo Bay, and the “6554” fine chemical base. All these initiatives are progressing steadily. Moving forward, the city will focus on promoting fine chemical processing projects, developing comprehensive industrial plans, strengthening industry regulation, and establishing the Wuhai Chlor-Alkali Chemical Industry Association to create an independent self-regulatory body. It will also accelerate the formulation of industrial strategies to extend and upgrade the PVC sector, improving overall competitiveness. Additionally, Wuhai will continue to shut down and eliminate calcium carbide enterprises that do not comply with national industrial policies.
